Headmasters' Report to the Board of Trustees

February 2008

The Faculty
  • Fall student teacher, Kate Brown, will facilitate classes in the Extended Hours Program in addition to teaching a Writer’s Workshop class.
  • We are hosting a new student teacher from the University of Colorado/Boulder in Language Arts during Blocks 4 and 5.
  • We are hosting 3 CU/Boulder practicum students in Math and Science for Blocks 3 & 4.
  • Faculty participated in a staff development workshop focused on research related to working with at-risk youth.
  • Faculty members were invited to participate in a grant awarded to the BUENO Multicultural Center at CU/Boulder that will pay full tuition for interested faculty to pursue a Master’s Degree in Multicultural Education.
  • We have added one additional person, Gina Brown, to the Direct Instruction team working with students below grade level proficiency.
The Students
  • More than 50% are earning 20 credits per block (4 classes)
  • More than 75% are earning 10 or more credits per block (2 classes)
  • Three students visited and interviewed with Colorado College counselors in Colorado Springs.
  • A waitlist for enrollment was established in mid November. The entrance interview process has been reinstated to enroll an additional 17 students for Block 3.
  • The Entry Interview process continues. Approximately 32 new students have taken part in this process.
  • An additional 7 students have been admitted to the Extended Hours Program during Block 3.
  • Increased student retention by 15%
The Program
  • The Seventh Annual Pasta Pot Luck will take place on March 6. We invite Board member to join our staff, students, parents and alumni at 5:30pm.
  • Mike Jacobs, Holocaust survivor was the guest speaker and the guest of honor at the Dushanbe Tea House where staff and selected students were given an opportunity to interact with him.
  • One Friday Life Skills was devoted to Etiquette and culminated in a banquet where students were served a four course luncheon by the staff. Students were able to enjoy the main course from Tokyo Joe's thanks to a gift card donated by CJ Gauss.
  • Students who registered for PE classes enjoy traveling to the Boulder Rec Center for each class to participate in physical education activities.
  • Seniors have participated in visitation and tours of the CU/Boulder campus and the Front Range Community College campus.
The Facilities
  • Classes extend to include community resources at the Boulder Recreation Center and the Kakes Studio.
  • We are investigating the installation of an outside spigot that would allow students to create a functional greenhouse and garden as part of a science/service learning class.
  • Faculty and students continue our efforts to be our own janitorial service.
