Headmasters' Report to the Board of Trustees

December 2007

The Faculty
  • Headmaster and a faculty member attended and presented at the International Peace Conference in Vancouver, British Columbia .
  • Fall student teacher, Kate Brown, will be returning for Block 3 to teach a Writer's Workshop class.
  • A new student teacher from the University of Colorado/Boulder interviews for a possible position for spring semester.
  • The faculty gives positive feedback on the CU/Boulder practicum students that we hosted during Blocks 1 and 2.
  • Faculty participated in a four-hour staff development workshop focused on research related to working with at-risk youth. Articles used as the basis for these discussions will be available to board members.
  • Faculty members were invited to a holiday party hosted by Andre and Lili.
The Students
  • The final count for enrollment is 148.
  • Five senior portfolios have been submitted for December graduation.
  • An Exit Interview process has been implemented to provide additional support for struggling students. Approximately 20 students have taken part in this process.
  • A waitlist for enrollment was established in mid November. The entrance interview process has been reinstated to enroll an additional 17 students for Block 3.
  • Ten turkeys were given to students of low-income families for Thanksgiving. Turkeys will also be given to families in need for the winter holiday season.
The Program
  • The Seventh Annual Chili Cook-Off took place on November 27. Approximately 50 people were in attendance including students, parents and alumni.
  • The Annual Fundraising Breakfast took place on November 30. Approximately 30 people were in attendance and heard presentations from administrators, students and alumni. Approximately $24,000 was raised.
  • Block 3 will emphasize course offerings in the core academic classes to assist students in their preparation for spring ACT and graduation requirements.
  • Approximately 60 students took the ACT on the October and December testing dates.
  • On Friday, December 14, students and staff will participate in a holiday luncheon and celebration of w inter traditions from around the world. Board members are invited to join us at 11:30.
  • Students can earn Life Skills credit by donating one cup of rice through the website www.FreeRice.com that tests vocabulary.
The Facilities
  • A second van was purchased.
  • A drinking fountain w as installed to reduce the cost of bottled water and cone cups.
  • Faculty and students continue our efforts to be our own janitorial service.
